Grief can drive people to substance addiction and the type of rehab clinic which can take this underlying cause into account is the best way of helping these individuals, an organisation asserts.
Jacqueline Dawes, the owner and founder of Brookhaven Retreat, claims the loss of a child can often drive mothers to take up destructive habits in an attempt to address the pain and trauma this causes.
Herself having lost an 18-year-old daughter, she set up the rehab clinic after recovering from the emotional damage this caused.
Ms Dawes claims guilt, disbelief and anger created by a loss of this type can often lead people to consume alcohol or drugs in an effort to forget the past.
She states: "Women with undiagnosed and untreated mental health needs are very vulnerable to prescription, drug and alcohol dependency."
The business owner recommends people get external help and suggests rehab clinics as a key way of overcoming both the loss and the habits developed due to this.
In other news, scientific journal Addiction reports that alcohol dependency can be affected by the price drink is sold at.
A review of previous research found the cost affects the frequency and quantity consumed.
