The number of people in Louisiana entering into gambling addiction programmes remains steady, a new survey has revealed.
Results from the 2008 Louisiana Study on Problem Gambling indicate there are approximately 54,360 people at risk of gambling addiction statewide, while almost 50 per cent of Louisiana 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th grade students.
Office for Addictive Disorders assistant secretary Michael Duffy said the study allows the organisation to locate where the highest concentration of gambling activity is and treat it more effectively.
Regarding the information on youth gambling, he added: "This data also helps us to identify areas where youths may be at-risk for developing problems associated with gambling.
"This allows us to target our limited resources to develop prevention programming in these areas."
According to the research, 1.7 percent of gamblers in the state are at-risk for addiction, and 1.4 percent are pathological or compulsive gamblers.
Last week, The Age reported gambling addicts in Victoria, Australia, are losing AUS $5 billion (£2 billion) per year - representing a half-a-billion-dollar rise in four years.
