Young people need to have greater protection from the threat of gambling addiction, it has been claimed.
Experts in Las Vegas have suggested that colleges and universities need to take a greater influence in tackling problem gambling among students by using existing programs to help youngsters with alcohol and drug addictions.
"It is important, we believe, for schools to send a clear, unified message about acceptable behaviors," said Christine Reilly, a member of the task force and executive director of the Institute for Research on Gambling Disorders.
She added: "It's very common for schools to have different rules for alcohol use...and for gambling, and so we think this is an issue that colleges should think about."
There are growing fears that the global recession could result in many more people heading to rehab centers because of problems with gambling, as people facing redundancy look to win their fortunes.
Earlier this year, experts in Florida reported a significant rise in the number of people seeking addiction treatment for gambling problems after blackjack was legalized in the state.
