More money should be put into the supplying of alcohol addiction treatment clinics, a charity asserts.
A spokesperson talking on behalf of Alcohol Concern claims a number of new measures need to be implemented if the issue of problematic drinking is to be tackled.
She states the UK has a culture of alcohol abuse and this behaviour forms a key part in people's social lives.
Calling on the government to implement a number of measures to tackle the increasing level of problem drinking, the charity recommends the price of alcohol should be raised.
Recent trends which show the rising occurrence of binge drinking presents an issue for the whole country, the representative comments.
She adds: "[They should] put more money into treatment services, tackle irresponsible advertising and promotions and introduce better education and information about the health harms of alcohol abuse."
Dawn Primarolo, the public health minister, told the National Alcohol Conference a new government initiative would aim to increase access to specialist alcohol addiction treatment.
She states that at present there is one place for every 18 who show the symptoms of a dependence on drinking.
