More teenagers have been attending rehab clinics in an effort to overcome alcohol or drug addiction problems.
A survey from the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse (NTA) has shown the majority of the 23,905 people from this group received help through substance abuse counselling.
It found 80 per cent of those seeking treatment were doing so to help with alcohol or cannabis addiction, with 51 per cent primarily receiving support to stop them smoking the drug.
Rosanna O'Connor, the NTA's director of delivery, claims the results are "excellent" and show that help is being provided to those who need it.
She states: "Young people receiving substance misuse interventions cannot be described as addicts in the same way as adults in treatment are, but are vulnerable to lives damaged by drugs and future dependence if they are not provided with relevant interventions early enough."
The agency was established in 2001 in order to improve the availability, capacity and effectiveness of treatment for substance abuse in England, which includes the services offered by rehab clinics.
In other news, Paul Spanjar, treatment director for Providence Projects, advises those who want professional help to overcome their alcohol or drug addiction to look at potential treatment centres' success rates to help them decide.
