Steven Page, lead singer of US rock band Barenaked Ladies, has been told the felony charges against him will be waivered if he adheres to several conditions, including going into drug rehab, it has been reported.
Following his arrest in July for possession of cocaine and marijuana, the Onandaga's county district attorney's office reduced the severity of the penalties facing him to a misdemeanour as long as he keeps out of trouble for the next six months.
He will need to undergo a course of drug treatment, which he has agreed to, a result which has been described by Mr Page's lawyer as positive.
Mark Mahoney said: "[This shows] a positive attitude to overcome his or her mistake and avoid the catastrophic consequences of a criminal conviction."
While the musician did not take any questions from the press after receiving the verdict, he said in a statement he was grateful for the opportunity to make up for his offence and considers the next half-year as "a period of healing and growth".
