A new addiction treatment is being developed in the US that uses the latest nanotechnology to help addicts beat their illness.
Researchers from the University at Buffalo, in New York, claim to have found a way to use tiny particles to deliver molecules to the brain.
According to the scientists, they can use the nanoparticles to deliver molecules that can turn off the gene linked to drug addiction, potentially offering a new way of approaching treatment for addicts.
"These findings mean that in the future, we might be able to add a powerful pharmaceutical agent to the current arsenal of weapons in order to more effectively fight a whole range of substance addictions," explained Paras Prasad, who led the university's research team.
However, helping people overcome addiction through traditional programmes developed at rehab clinics remains the most effective way of dealing with addiction problems at present.
Earlier this year, one US doctor claimed that taking a commonly-prescribed muscle relaxant had helped him overcome his alcohol addiction. But experts were quick to point out that what worked for one person might not be effective for others, demonstrating the importance of getting a tailored treatment programme as part of a stay in a rehab centre.
