The importance of drug addiction recovery has been highlighted by a new film being released in the Philippines.
Tulak, which is directed by Neal Tan, follows the story of Tikboy, whose upbringing has centred around the Manila drug trade, philstar.com reports.
Starring Rafael Rosell, the movie begins with a session at a drug rehabilitation centre before documenting Tikboy's battle to save his auntie from the clutches of drug addiction.
The production is backed by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and the Dangerous Drug Board, organisations attempting to prevent and control drug addiction in the south-east Asian country.
According to the news provider, Rosell "embraces the role with gusto" by giving a "human face and back story" to the problem of drug addiction.
"The inevitable 'preaching' that we anticipate is done in an intelligent and reasonable manner, and there's much thats positive about the film," it stated.
Figures from the Philippines' National Statistical Co-ordination Board suggest that drug use in the country remains a significant problem, with almost 11,000 people arrested in drug-related incidents in 2007.
While this is an increase from the 6,538 recorded in 1993, it is a notable decline from the 33,150 recorded in 2003.
