There appears to be no link between those in need of gambling addiction support and excessive internet use.
This is according to a study published in the Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking journal, which discovered that, despite the two having no overlap, each addictive behaviour has common traits.
Among the most notable are psychological issues including anxiety, depression, loneliness and stress.
Commenting on the findings, Dr Brenda Wiederhold, the journal's editor-in-chief, said: "It is clear that effectively evaluating and treating these disorders requires a clear understanding of the individual symptomatology and internal conflicts particular to each patient."
The study has conducted on a small group of university students in Australia, with the vulnerabilities contributing to either an increase in internet use or gambling.
A separate report published in the Archives of General Psychiatry earlier this month found that genetic influences contributes to the development of problem gambling in both men and women.
