The method of abstinence in the months and years after coming off drugs or alcohol has been praised in a recent article.
People who once were dependent on drink or suffered from an alcoholic addiction should never drink again, even if just one or two, according to the Times.
The publication highlights the case of recovering alcoholic Claire who had been sober for two years and was tempted into having "just one" by a new partner, who was also getting over alcohol abuse.
What started as a "challenge" became two days of drinking which led to Claire being admitted to hospital.
Nick Heather, professor of alcohol and other drug studies at Northumbria University, told the newspaper: "It's extremely difficult to maintain a pattern of controlled drinking. The much easier option is for them [dependents] to rule alcohol out of the equation."
In other news, the Plymouth Evening Herald reported a man who held his family at knifepoint has been offered alcohol addiction treatment instead of jail.
