A senator is Australia has said internet gambling needs to be subjected to closer scrutiny in order to prevent the spread of gambling addiction.
Nick Xenophon, an independent, said the federal government's review of gambling must include online forms of betting, AAP reports.
While smart cards are likely to be installed in Australia's poker machines - a measure that will allow gambling use and losses to be tracked - Mr Xenophon said that greater attention needs to be paid to online betting.
During an interview with ABC Television, he said that people with gambling addictions could easily migrate from physical to online gambling.
"I think you'll find the most significant source of gambling addiction in this country is because of poker machines - something like 85 per cent of gamblers," he explained to the TV channel.
"But we also need to review online gambling laws so we don't have an emerging problem in years to come."
The Interactive Gambling Act was introduced in Australia in 2001 to target the providers of interactive gambling services.
