Parents must be taught to understand the signs which reveal their child has been engaging in drug abuse if they are to refer them for treatment, an expert asserts.
Dee Cowen, a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), claims it is important for users' loved ones to understand the symptoms of the problem.
She identifies the fact denial is one of the most common responses to the problem and advises parents not to allow this to put them off persuading their child to attend a rehab clinic.
The LCSW has set up a website providing information on the signs of drug addiction and ways to get motivated to seek help.
Ms Cohen states: "In my counseling practice, I see many parents not concerned that their child smokes pot a bit here and there. When I speak to the teen, it turns out they may be getting high daily after school and keeping it a secret."
Earlier this month, a study published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research claimed chronic drinking such as alcohol addiction behaviors is more harmful than episodic or binge drinking.
