Teen drug addiction can be tackled and even prevented by proactive parents, it has been suggested.
Mary Rieser, executive director of Narcon Drug rehab in Georgia, has argued that parental guidance and open communication are the two main factors in reducing the risk of youngsters becoming drug addicts.
It is also vital in helping those that do have problems to get through their addiction treatment successfully, she suggested.
"It has long been recognized that parental guidance and parental influence go a long way in helping children stay off drugs and live drug-free, happy lives," she explained.
She said that new research had found more parents are now talking to their children about drugs and that has had a positive impact, with many children willing to listen and have a proper discussion about the issue.
Meanwhile, research from the University of Kentucky recently suggested that many young drug addicts do not get the addiction treatment that they need.
According to the study, just ten per cent of adolescents in the US that need help for substance abuse problems actually enter into drug treatment programmes, because few are tailored to deal with the types of problems faced by younger abusers.
