alcohol addiction is more common in those who have little reaction to alcohol, a new study has found.
The research looked at the influence of a low level of alcohol response in connection to characteristics such as family history of alcohol-use disorders.
It found that a low level of response to alcohol is also genetically linked.
Marc A Schuckit, director of the Alcohol Research Center in California and author for the study, said that those with an alcohol addiction need to tell their children that they are four times more likely than average to share the illness.
"If your kid does drink, find out if they can 'drink others under the table,' and warn them that that is a major indication they have the risk themselves," he continued.
It is hoped that study will lead to further ways of identifying this risk in early life and to decrease it.
The results will be published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research in September.
Another study published in the issue warns that alcohol intoxication is not always visible.
