More people could be seeking drug addiction support in the future as the popularity of mephedrone increases in UK clubs.
According to a new survey by Mixmag, one in three clubbers have used the legal substance, which has "gone from nowhere to the mainsteam" in less than two years.
This is according to study leader Dr Adam Winstock, who told BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat: "For a drug that's been around for a relatively short amount of time, mephedrone has certainly made a big impact on the dance drug scene."
With addiction help likely to be sought in the future, the government is placing increasing importance on determining just how dangerous the drug is, with a team of experts warning that mephedrone may have "serious public health implications".
The drug is normally sold as "plant food" online and is usually snorted, although users can also take it as a pill, inject it or mix it with a drink.
Mephedrone's effects have been likened to something in between ecstasy and cocaine.
According to a report in the Daily Mail published last month, a gram of mephedrone costs as little as £7.
