Individuals in need of drug addiction support in Florida are being identified in an initiative to prepare communities ahead of reforms to health care.
Southwest Florida addiction services will work alongside Lee Memorial Health System in the Accelerating Reform program, which allows health care organizations to foster closer working relationships in terms of drug addiction treatments.
Kevin Lewis, Addiction Services' chief executive officer, said his organization is "very excited" to be taking part in the project.
"With expected health care reform, we anticipate that there will be more people eligible for substance abuse treatment services through their new health insurance plans," he explained.
Mr Lewis went on to say that, currently, those in need of drug addiction help often end up in emergency rooms in hospital for treatment. Not only is this the most expensive option, he stated, but emergency departments are not generally equipped to provide this type of service.
addiction services is receiving a grant from the Network for the Improvement of Addiction Treatment, and will cover the cost of travel and the organizing of workshops.
On Sunday (March 21st), the House of Representatives passed, albeit narrowly, a healthcare reform bill by 219 votes to 212.
