A Canadian hip-hop band has been talking about the drug addiction developed by one of their bandmates and has discussed how staging an intervention provided the wake-up call he needed.
Swollen Members was doing well during the early part of the decade, with a number of hits and winning three consecutive Juno Awards for best rap recording from 2001 to 2003.
However, behind the scenes all was not well, as rapper Mad Child had developed a drug addiction and was taking large amounts of painkiller Oxycontin on a daily basis.
His bandmates were becoming increasingly worried about the addiction and as a result staged an intervention, Metro Canada reports, offering a support network and providing information to the rapper's parents so that they were able to keep track of the situation.
Eventually, Mad Child sought help and has been able to overcome his problems through a course of addiction treatment, slowly being weaned off the drug.
Commenting on the difficult period, bandmate Prevail - who helped stage the intervention - told the news provider: "I think we all needed a support network, just in case."
Swollen Members has since gone on to make a new album, Armed to the Teeth, and is currently touring in Canada once more.
