A surge in people needing stays in rehab clinics could be on the way as the recession continues to see jobs cut in the UK, it has been suggested.
More people will become addicted to alcohol and drugs over the months ahead because a "second wave" of the recession will leave many people struggling to cope, the Audit Commission has warned.
The organisation believes that local authorities will need to provide greater addiction treatment services because many more people will be put under stress because of the economic gloom, leading many to seek solace in alcohol and drugs.
"Councils need to prepare to combat a wide range of resultant social problems," explained Steve Bundred, head of the commission.
Deprived areas will be worst affected by the problems, meaning rehab clinics and addiction recovery services in these areas will be crucial to help people tackle their addiction problems.
Earlier this year, it was reported that the US had seen a significant rise in the number of people suffering from gambling addictions.
It has been suggested that many people have been turning to gambling in a bid to ease their money worries during the recession, but instead have become hooked.
