A former alcohol addiction victim from Widnes is starting a UK campaign to help persuade those in a similar situation to seek help, such as that provided by rehab clinics.
David Roberts, who has not had a drink for 13 months, is currently producing promotional materials for the initiative, the Runcorn and Widnes Weekly News reports.
He claims everything which has gone wrong in his life has its root in alcohol abuse, citing the example of an Asbo he received two years previously for drinking on a bench.
"What many people don't realise is that alcoholism is a disease, not a crime
it's time that somebody took a stand against this disease and nobody is better placed than me to do so," Mr Roberts tells the news provider.
Halton borough council has advised its inhabitants to drink carefully as while 90 per cent do so without ill effect, for others the problem has a serious impact.
It advises those with a problem to seek help and support, such as that supplied by a rehab clinic, the source reports.
Charity Alcohol Concern recently called on the government to provide more money to fund alcohol abuse treatment centres.
