A New Mexico rehab center has launched a new addiction treatment in the form of acupuncture therapy.
The Desert Oasis recovery center in Albuquerque has unveiled its new service, which it suggests is capable of helping patients to beat their addictive behavior and overcome their problems.
According to the rehab clinic, auricular "accu-detox" acupuncture is designed specifically to help drug, alcohol and gambling addicts to beat their problems and has been developed from a protocol from the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association.
"The treatment uses points in the ears that relate to organs involved in detoxification or addiction treatment, [which are] the liver, kidneys, lungs, and nervous system," the organisation stated.
Tami Pacheco, executive director of Desert Oasis, said: "Accu-detox as form of therapy in reducing cravings for addictive drugs and reducing anxiety is extremely effective."
According to Beating addictions UK, acupuncture has been proven to significantly relieve the symptoms of withdrawal from opiates, alcohol and tobacco, as well as reduce cravings among gambling addicts.
The US Air Force has recently begun training its medical personnel in acupuncture techniques to help troops recover from traumatic experiences while serving in places such as Afghanistan and Iraq.
