A community of former drug addicts has been set up in Abilene, Texas, in a move to prevent people relapsing after spending time in a rehab center.
The Genesis II New Beginning rehab clinic is offering to support people looking to beat their addictions by housing them in a community of fellow former addicts, so that they have a ready-made support network to stop them relapsing.
It is hoped the approach will help people coming out of a rehab center to stay away from their addiction by taking them out of their old lifestyle, reports the Abilene Reporter News.
Many people who have a stint in rehab will return to their old homes and the threat is that this return to normality will result in a return to old habits and eventually lead to a relapse.
By taking people out of that cycle, it is hoped that the new center will provide the change needed to help people break their addiction for good.
Many drug rehabilitation units today focus on the individual needs of the patient, looking to provide tailored advice and support, rather than choosing a one-size-fits-all programme that may not be appropriate for all addicts.
