The odds of addiction recovery can be improved by undergoing rehabilitation clinic therapy, a new study shows.
Harvard Medical School's Overcoming Addiction: Paths Towards Recovery report identifies a number of effective programmes which can help those with this type of problem overcome it.
Foremost, it advises people looking for addiction recovery to seek help, whether from professionals such as doctors or substance abuse treatment centres.
Among the secondary measures it advocates are to change the environment by removing items that have associations with the addiction, such as wine glasses, playing cards or corkscrews.
In addition, those undergoing addiction recovery should learn new skills or undertake activities which could help prevent relapse into these behaviours.
As well as undergoing treatment at a behavioural or substance abuse clinic, the report advises about the importance of a support network comprising of families, friends or co-workers.
It states: "A number of effective treatments can help people recover from addiction, including self-help strategies, psychotherapy, medications, rehabilitation programs, or a combination of these elements."
Earlier this month, two students from the University of Portsmouth established writing and performing workshops for attendees at a nearby rehab clinic.
