Rehabilitation is the key factor in recovering from drug addiction, it has been claimed.
An article published on impre.com asserts imprisonment is not the correct solution to help those with drug problems.
The author states there is "an imbalance" in the approach to addiction, which sees "punishment prevail over rehabilitation".
According to the news provider, by offering alternatives to custodial sentences money can be saved by freeing up space in prisons, with these funds then being invested in implementing programmes for those with dependency problems.
The article goes on to suggest judges could be given discretion to determine whether an offender is attempting to use drug problems as a way of avoiding a prison term, with those suitable for rehab being put into schemes instead of being sentenced.
Earlier this week, research released by John Curran, minister of state in charge of the National Drugs Strategy, showed the number of people who have taken cocaine in Ireland has increased by three per cent between 2002 and 2007.
The rise means 5.3 per cent of people in Ireland have now used cocaine, according to the Drug Prevalence Survey: Cocaine Results study.
