A substance abuse treatment centre in the US is providing ropes courses - an outward bound-style series of activities - to help its patients overcome their dependencies.
The Ambrosia addiction treatment Center is offering the system as a means of building self-confidence through physical activity.
Its rope courses aim to teach those undergoing addiction support clinic treatments how to tackle positive risks and conquer their fears.
The rehab clinic states that physical activity produces endorphins, leading to the creation of serotonin which it claims can help those with dependencies overcome their problems.
According to the group, it helps those struggling with addiction to focus on their spiritual, mental and physical wellness, which will provide a key to a new way of life.
It claims: "The ropes course is one more weapon Ambrosia is using to defeat client's dependence on drugs and alcohol. What clients learn on this course will inevitably carry over into their new, sober life."
Among the abilities Ambrosia states rope courses can develop are patients' decision-making skills, trust and self-confidence.
