substance abuse treatment needs the patient to undergo self-evaluation to ensure a positive outcome of their addiction treatment, it has been suggested.
According to research from the University of Maryland in the US, patients need to take a good look at themselves and understand their reasons behind wanting to quit before they can make a successful break with their addiction.
"The initial motivation of clients is a critical issue for treatment and for changing their drinking behaviours," explained Carlo DiClemente of the MDQUIT research centre at the university.
"Individuals differ on important dimensions of motivation for change and motivation for treatment in terms of their goals, intentions, attitudes, and changes in activities," he added.
These differences need to be properly understood both by the individual and the rehab clinic where they are being treated if their substance abuse treatment is to be a success.
Dr DiClemente added that readiness to tackle substance abuse and put it behind the patient once and for all is about the self-confidence of the individual to change their behaviour.
rehab clinics in the US and UK are increasingly aware of the importance of tailoring their substance abuse treatments to the individual so that they get a personalised service directed to their particular needs.
