A man with an alcohol addiction who shoplifted goods from a DIY chain while on license has been recalled and ordered to attend substance abuse treatment, a source reveals.
Mark Flynn was caught stealing three saw blades from B&Q, the Watford Observer reports.
Prior to the incident, he had been drinking and defence lawyer Andrew Harman says his client could not remember the incident as the alcohol had reacted with his medication.
As part of the community order the magistrates imposed, the defendant will have to attend alcohol abuse therapy and substance abuse treatment.
The lawyer tells the news provider Mr Flynn is "sorry and embarrassed" by the incident as "he cannot see the logic in it".
"If he was stealing to make money for drink, [saw blades] are not good things to steal," Mr Harman states.
A source reports the court heard the prison service had not asked for the man to be returned.
In related news, according to a Select Committee on Home Affair report, alcohol-related offences cost the country £1.7 billion last year.
