Southampton has been given a portion of £1.5 million of funding to battle alcohol abuse in the city.
The city has been identified as one of 50 hotspot areas and will use the funding to tackle underage drinking, selling to under-18s and tougher enforcement of laws, reports the Southern Daily Echo.
Southampton was awarded £30,000 of the £1.5 million set aside by the Home Office to aid in battling alcohol-driven crimes and reducing the number of people who need alcohol abuse treatment.
Alan Campbell, Home Office minister, tells the newspaper: "I fully expect this will boost the drive against alcohol-related crime and disorder, and help reduce alcohol-related problems in Southampton."
He described the funding move as a "timely boost" to law enforcement in the area.
John Denham, Labour MP for Southampton, says the move will meet what the city's residents want to fight anti-social behaviour.
He says that people engaging in alcohol abuse who cause trouble for others should be held accountable for their actions.
Figures from the British Crime Survey for 2007-08 show that in 45 per cent of all violent incidents victims think offenders have engaged in alcohol abuse.
This increased to 58 per cent if the attacker was someone they did not know.
