A north-east man is offering alcohol addiction help to individuals in the region after undergoing an addiction programme in eastern Europe.
Reformed alcoholic Russell Hughes, from Sunderland, successfully sought alcohol addiction support in Latvia and is now keen to tell others about how he was able to stop drinking, the Sunderland Echo reports.
The 44-year-old told the newspaper that the majority of enquiries he has received have been from middle-aged women, something that has taken him by surprise.
"We were prepared for a great deal of interest but what we were not prepared for was who it would be from," he explained.
"I would say 95 per cent of the inquiries we've had are from women in their 40s who tell us they are at home drinking sometimes as many as three bottles of wine a night."
Mr Hughes went on to say some of the women are so desperate for alcohol addiction therapy that they are willing to fly to Latvia immediately to receive the same treatment as he received.
He described his former self as a "functioning alcoholic" - despite being addicted to drink he remained in his job, which often involved international travel, supplying electrical goods.
According to drinkaware.co.uk, alcohol is accountable for approximately 33,000 deaths in Britain every year.
