People with alcohol addiction and young people are vulnerable to steep drops in the price of drink such as the promotion recently implemented by Tesco, experts have argued.
The Telegraph reports the supermarket chain has been criticised for its selling of 18 bottles of Carlsberg beer for £5 due to the effects it may have on binge-drinking and alcohol addiction.
Professor Ian Gilmore, president of the Royal College of Physicians, told the publication there is a direct link between the level of consumption of alcohol in the UK and how it is priced.
"It's astonishing that the supermarkets are behaving in this way, at a time when the government is finishing a report about the responsibility of the drinks industry," he remarked.
Employees at some outlets have reported 100 crates being sold in an hour, the newspaper claims.
In other news, drug offences have risen in the St Edmundsbury borough by 58 per cent this year, according to the Bury Free Press.
