A man who successfully sought gambling addiction intervention said his habit was so bad that he didn't know the colour of children's eyes.
Martin - not his real name - told the Irish Independent that each of his children was born at different addresses because the extent of his addiction meant he was constantly on the move to avoid bailiffs.
He went on to say that many people living close by had chosen to take their own lives because their addictions had got so bad.
According to the newspaper, there are "many thousands" of men and women in the country in need of gambling addiction support, with the issue recently highlighted by the case of Patrick Brown, an events manager who was recently jailed for five weeks after spending over 200,000 (£171,000) of other people's money to fund his gambling addiction.
The rise of online gambling has been blamed for worsening Ireland's addiction problem, with a spokesperson from Gamblers Anonymous stating that online poker has become "absolutely rampant".
"All you need is a computer and a credit card," he told the newspaper.
It is estimated that between one and three per cent of Ireland's population are problem gamblers, most of whom are men.
