The UK must learn to adopt a continental approach to drinking if it is to reduce the demand for rehab clinics, an expert asserts.
Matthew Taylor, an analyst at Datamonitor, claims France is one of the models to emulate, as there is an association with responsible consumption.
He says this is an approach to drinking Brits seek to replicate, which would reduce the problems created by alcohol addiction or abuse.
Research produced by Mr Taylors company show there is a higher level of awareness about the dangers presented by heavy drinking, with half of adults giving attention to avoiding too high a level of consumption.
It has also found the number of people taking part in abstention increases with age, but young adults remain the most likely demographic to adopt this behaviour.
Mr Taylor states: "The number of people abstaining from alcohol we find is increasing in quite a few areas not specifically attributable to the credit crunch."
In addition, Datamonitor's report suggests the number of teetotallers may increase due to the credit crunch.
