An increasing number of students are seeking help with their alcohol and drug addictions at a drug rehab treatment centre based on a US university campus, a source reveals.
Vivian Coeur, a licensed clinical professional counselor working at the Western Illinois University Alcohol and Other Drug Resource Centre, tells the Western Courier the largest proportion of its users visit because they are mandated.
She says the site sees between 600 and 800 students a year and the services provided by the rehab clinic are focused on this demographic.
Identifying alcohol abuse as the most common reason for people attending, she tells the news provider people with cannabis problems are the second most frequent users.
Ms Coeur claims: "It is hard to accept the fact that you may need to change something until you are facing some pretty big consequences, but we are seeing an increase in students that seek treatment on their own."
Recent figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show there will be an increase of 34 per cent in the number of alcohol and drug addiction counselors between 2006 and 2016, the Boston Herald reports.
