Plans in New Hampshire for a state-owned casino and an expansion of gambling at racetracks could lead to an increase in the number of people heading to addiction rehab centers, it has been claimed.
According to the Union Leader publication, if the two laws are agreed, then they could lead to a major rise in gambling-related addiction problems in the area.
"Even supporters admit that gambling addiction could double if casinos are introduced to New Hampshire," the publication's editorial said.
Supporters of the plans have suggested the schemes would bring in large amounts of money into the state's coffers, but campaigners and critics are worried that it will have a huge impact on the number of people heading to rehab centers with gambling addictions.
The US recently held a week focussing on problem gambling in an effort to raise awareness of the problem and provide more support to help people tackle their gambling addictions.
In Florida, the number of people heading to rehab centers with blackjack addictions has increased significantly in the past 12 months and is now more of a problem in the state than poker.
