The number of young people who may need addiction treatment for alcohol-related problems could soar in the future because so many are currently drinking to excess, it has been claimed.
According to a study carried out by the Trading Standards Institute, a growing number of youngsters are binge drinking and consuming dangerous quantities of alcohol on a weekly basis.
As well as the damage to internal organs that binge drinking can cause, there is also a danger that many young people will become hooked on alcohol and have to enter into rehab clinics later in life to deal with their problems.
While the number of teenagers who drink weekly has fallen from 50 per cent in 2005 to 38 per cent this year, it seems those that are still regularly drinking are also consuming dangerously high amounts.
It found a quarter of those that drink on a weekly basis are consuming more than 20 units every week, which equates to ten pints.
Such a high volume of alcohol consumption every week could result in many young people suffering alcohol addiction problems and needing to head into rehab centres.
Last month, research compiled by Canada's Center for Addiction and Mental Health found as many as one in 25 deaths worldwide are related to alcohol.
