More attention needs to be paid to the growing problem of gambling addiction among young people in Macau.
This is according to a member of the Macau New Chinese Youth Association (MNCYA), who said this focus needs to be at the expense of an improved transport infrastructure and new public housing projects, the Macau Daily Times reports.
During a meeting with Singapore's Young People's Action Party, the MNCYA's Kou Ngon Fong, who also sits on the special administrative region's public housing affairs advisory committee, said he is "very concerned" about the effects of gambling on young people.
"Singapore has just opened two casinos and they're very nervous about how gambling may affect the young people," he told the newspaper.
"Macau in contrast is very casual and people above 18 years old can enter the casinos freely whenever they want."
Mr Ngon Fong went on to say that schools have an important role to play in encouraging pupils and students not to get involved in gambling.
Macau is often referred to as the 'Monte Carlo of the Orient', with gambling having been legal since the 1850s.
