A project which helps young people in the South Wales Valleys overcome substance abuse has been commended by social justice minister Dr Brian Gibbons.
The Turnaround scheme in Pontypridd aims to help youngsters with drug and alcohol abuse problems so they can return to mainstream education, training and employment.
Dr Gibbons said the government hopes to build upon the success of schemes such as Turnaround with its ten-year plan to reduce the harm that drug and alcohol abuse can cause.
"The misuse of drugs, alcohol or other substances is still one of the most devastating ways in which individuals can harm themselves, their families and the communities they live in," he commented.
Paul Keenleyside, assistant director of Connexions, stated that last year 79 per cent of the young people who attended Turnaround left the programme and entered employment, education or training.
This week research was published in the journal Psychological Science which revealed that drinking and smoking cannabis before the age of 15 leads to poorer health in the 30s.
