Many women binge drink without even realising that they are doing it, according to the Institute of Alcohol Studies.
alcohol abuse has increased because drinks have got larger and stronger, said a research manager at the institute.
Dr Rachel Seabrook explained that in many cases the strength of wine has increased from around 12 per cent to 15 per cent. Since women tend to drink more wine than men, this change has affected them in particular.
She also pointed out that the standard wine glass in pubs is often 250ml, double the size of a decade ago.
"If you show somebody now an old 125ml glass, it's tiny, it looks like a thimble. We've just had this gradual creep in the portion size and also the strength of wine," she said.
According to research from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the average number of alcohol units consumed by men and women in the UK has increased since 1992.
Women over 25 in particular show evidence of increased consumption, whereas the intake of alcohol by men aged 16 to 24 has actually decreased since 2000.
