Drug addiction is a disease. A repeated behaviour to the brain and body that is rewarding to a person and that is extremely difficult to stop without addiction treatment. There are three stages of addiction: Anticipation, Intoxication and Negative effects.
Constant cravings then arise with more of the substance being used. Consequently tolerance levels rise, withdrawal symptoms develop and finally decreased motivation for work and normal living occur.
This is a serious disease that must be treated as if you were diagnosed with any other serious illness.
Total abstinence from all mind-altering substances is a simple rule. This rule takes time to learn and starts with addiction treatment in rehab then attending meetings to assist with long term recovery.
Relapse does happen as with many other medical illnesses like asthma and diabetes. As a chronic and recurring illness, with some patients, Addiction may require a few treatments to increase the intervals between relapses until total abstinence is achieved.
