THE IMPORTANCE OF AFTERCARE
Even if a patient has the most supportive group of friends and family members, there will still be a level of understanding that cannot exist between an addict and a non-addict. Aftercare is designed to provide a safe atmosphere where patients can connect with groups or individuals who have gone through similar experiences. Group counselling and one-on-one therapy sessions are an important part of the rehabilitation process because they provide the patient with the chance to speak without being judged, something that aftercare will provide for years after rehab is complete.
ATTENDING MEETINGS AND COUNSELING
In most cases aftercare is entirely optional, but the rate of relapse in patients who choose not to attend meetings is higher than in those who take part. Group therapy allows patients to meet people in their area who struggle the same way they do and gives them a powerful support system in their community. Patients may not always have the time to attend aftercare sessions but it is strongly recommended that they participate whenever possible to decrease the chances of relapse.
