Before primary care can begin it may be necessary for the patient to go through a detoxification process.

WHAT IS THE DETOXIFICATION PROCESS?

For any person suffering from a drug or alcohol addiction it is required that they go through a 5-14 day detoxification process to rid their body of the harmful substances inside it. The detox process cannot be used on its own to bring a patient to complete recovery, but is instead used as a precursor to the primary care. Detox can often be one of the most physically and emotionally painful parts of the rehabilitation process so it is important to go through it with qualified professionals at your side.

DOES EVERY PATIENT GO THROUGH DETOX?

Detox is not necessary for every patient and is often recommended to people who are currently using the drugs or alcohol that have brought them to rehab. Primary care will not be effective unless the patient is drug or alcohol free and detox is the only way the counsellors and employees of the rehabilitation facility can be guaranteed the patient is clean when they start treatment. After detox the patient will be placed in primary care and will begin therapy and, in extreme cases, be prescribed certain medications to help their body cope without the dangerous substance.
