One of the cornerstones of the rehabilitation process is counselling. The therapists who work at rehabilitation facilities are educated in addiction counselling and have experience helping their patients understand and overcome their addictions. Patients who are attending rehab for a mental health disorder will receive counselling from a therapist who is qualified and knowledgeable about mental illness.

WHAT IS GROUP COUNSELLING?

Group counselling is a version of therapy that includes one or more licensed therapists or counsellors leading a group of people in a discussion about their lives and addictions. There are separate groups for every issue and disorder, so a recovering addict is not required to share their therapy sessions with people who are not suffering from the same addiction. This also creates a strong support system of people in the community who are going through a similar experience.

GROUP COUNSELLING FOCUSES ON THEMES

While one on one counselling sessions can focus on the individual, group therapy focuses on themes or issues that are brought up by its members. This provides an atmosphere where a recovering addict or a person suffering from a mental health disorder is not required to immediately speak about what is bothering them. It provides them the opportunity to sit back, listen and interact at their own pace.

A COST EFFECTIVE SOLUTION TO THERAPY

One of the benefits that group counselling has over one on one counselling is the cost. Because the expenditure is being split between each member of group, this version of therapy is a lot more affordable to the majority of addicts or sufferers of mental illness once they have completed rehabilitation. This is a concern for any recovering addict who has successfully completed rehabilitation and would like to continue receiving counselling but has a family or limited income. It is a solution that allows people to continue receiving therapy for as long as they need it, effectively reducing the likelihood of relapse.
